𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚: 1. 2. 3. human male. on the taller side, toned musculature, well-balanced physique. handsome and modelesque but stronger than he looks. pale skin, dark and cool-toned brown hair usually worn tousled and loose with a slight undercut. gold-green eyes; in the process of linking with someone empathically, his pupils shift shape and become catlike. long eyelashes, dexterous hands, expressive features and body language. sports a wide range of fashions from more casual long-sleeves, button-ups, and sweaters to dressy suits and other haute designs. always wearing an earring in his left lobe, most often a thick steel hoop. 𝙙𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙖𝙣𝙤𝙧: mercurial and driven by compassion. sensitive to the states of others, kizuna is a social chameleon whose colors morph depending on what his current situation needs of him. while this makes him engaging and compelling on the surface, a valuable asset in investigative work, it often means that it's difficult to pin him and his motives down. he tips this hand in his favor knowingly, preferring to soothe over the ache of secrecy with distractions, chemistry, and charisma. this makes him somewhat of a peacock: extroverted, vibrant, and the first willing to go out of his way for anyone who asks. he is selfless to the point of destruction, easily persuaded into situations that are an active threat to him and always pushing the envelope even when his personal stakes are high. it's an ironic selfish streak that he denies himself safety while protecting others, even those who most wish to see him safe. though he puts on a ditzy front to conceal the depth of his insight about other people, he is sharp and observant with a keen eye for detail. 𝙥𝙤𝙬𝙚𝙧𝙨: a "true" empath. his ability has no origin, only that it was diagnosable in his youth and requires therapy to manage. on its surface, it's just that: the ability to feel the emotions of others. it's latent and always passively running, so kizuna has ambient mental, emotional, and physical feedback to contend with. as an active ability, kizuna can "link" with others. when linked, he can better access more complex and deeply-rooted emotions and memories. at a link's strongest, he can borrow physical skills from whoever he's linked to, such as fighting prowess. he can also link through video, such as watching a concert pianist and linking with them to play the piano himself. because the ability is latent, he doesn't always choose to link; strong, persistent, or abrupt emotions can cause him to link automatically, and he's not always aware of this bleedover. this aspect is easier to succumb to when he fails to properly sever and manage previous links. some methods he uses to mitigate the effects of his empathy are: touching his earring, counting prime numbers, and using headphones to listen to classical music, suggesting that his hearing is sensitive and strongly linked to his empathy. alcohol also works to an extent, but is a poor coping mechanism for his muddled memories. if kizuna doesn't properly manage his empathy, he can lose sight of himself and his emotions will shut down in defense of his heart, making him lash out at any stimuli with unmitigated strength and zero emotional capacity. the only way to call him out of this state is someone with strong emotions who also cares about him as a person linking with him to purge away the emotional overgrowth. in his mind's eye, getting in over his head is depicted as exactly that: being submerged in searing hot water and left to suffocate. 𝙝𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙮: (cw: csa and suicide unrelated to kizuna himself.) the second son of a wealthy and influential family. his family fell to scandal and ruin when the first son of the household assaulted an elementary school girl. kizuna was given up shortly after birth and lived in a children's facility until he was two, then was handed off between orphanages for a number of years. yashikida haruomi, a detective working a case that brought him to one such orphanage, met kizuna there when he was still a young child. yashikida interrupted a fight between him and the other children where kizuna attempted to attack and blind a bully with a piece of broken glass. though he intercepted the attack with his bare hands, a bloody and disquieting scene, kizuna failed to react to it. he was completely apathetic. compelled by kizuna's youth and propensity for violence, yashikida went on a deep dive to discover his identity, revealing the truth about his family. his father had long committed suicide and the rumors that saturated the town bore down on kizuna with an intimate and unmerciful cruelty. kizuna even warned yashikida away from him at his tender age, convinced that other people becoming close to him would make them "dirty." yashikida, recognizing that violence is the language of children seeking help, took kizuna in. finding him help with a doctor who was also an empath, kizuna remained coiled tightly in his own heart for many years, well into high school. even so, his violent tendencies faded with time as he found ways to mitigate its effects on him. yashikida was there in support of him, though he wondered if he'd ever see him smile — if he'd ever realize that he could also stand in the light. kizuna was alive, but only because his heart was beating. unengaged as he was, yashikida continued to be captivated by kizuna's potential. what finally turned the tide was yashikida ending up in the hospital for a broken leg, which he'd taken in good spirit, as yashikida does. a specific combination of stimuli arose there: the sound of rain, the smell of a get-well bouquet, and the urge to hum a song even when his headphones were off. yashikida remarked that it looked fun, that it was his first time hearing kizuna sing. kizuna, confronted with the way he felt, finally smiled for the first time since the two met. from there, kizuna learned to be the adult he is currently, forming his own detective agency to use his ability and skills to help others the way he was helped. to deliver salvation. however, it's remarked upon that as he is currently, kizuna is using his deep understanding of others to bury himself, afraid to look too closely at his own emotions for fear of what he'll find. sweet words, warm eyes, a place to belong... was there something important other people might miss beneath those things?
